GIPA Recognizes Georgian in the First Copyright Granted to AI-Assisted Art

GIPA celebrates Atlanta’s own Kent Keirsey for securing a first-of-its-kind U.S. Copyright Office registration for an artwork created with (and meaningfully shaped by) generative AI—“A Single Piece of American Cheese.” This milestone affirms what Georgia’s creative community already knows: when human imagination leads and technology assists, innovation flourishes.

Why this matters for creators in Georgia:

  • Human authorship still rules. The Copyright Office clarified that AI-assisted works can be protected when a human’s creative input is discernible and substantial.

  • Process documentation is power. Keirsey demonstrated an iterative, human-directed workflow—evidence that helped clear the bar for protection.

  • A win for the creative economy. From film and gaming to music and design, this precedent gives Georgia makers a clearer path to protect and monetize AI-enabled work.

"At GIPA, we champion creators and the protectors who help them build lasting value", states Corrine Sukiennik, GIPA’s Executive Director. "Intellectual Property is the engine that turn ideas into assets that drive culture and economic growth. Let us know how we can help you advance your ideas so that they are safeguarded from the start."

Congrats, Kent and Invoke—Georgia is proud.
